The Final Ultrasound Part Two: Bigger Than Average

April 2nd, 2010

It looks like my genes are going to play a role in the size of this baby. My mom had big babies. I was 8 pounds 6 ounces and my brother was… Get ready to do a Kegel… 10 pounds 9 ounces.

At my ultrasound the technician informed John and I that we have a bigger than average baby. He is currently between 4 and 4 and a half pounds. Apparently that’s the average size of a baby that’s due on May 15th, not May 30th. Our Doctor however has not moved our due date so, in my head I am still planning for the 30th. I don’t want to start thinking our due date is the 15th because that could make for a long two weeks.

The technician also told us that the baby is in the Frank Breech Position. That means his body is sort of folded in half like a diver. His head is at the top of my uterus, his bum is at the bottom and his feet are up near his head. I go back in 2 weeks to see if he’s moved.

Needless to say it was a pretty eventful day yesterday! A bigger than average baby… Did I mention I don’t have anything against drugs during labour?

  1. This post is just what I went through! Our final ultrasound the technician just said, you wont be having a 7 lbs baby thats for sure, Ollie ended up being 8 lbs 12 oz. And he was breech, Frank, and we went for a version, didn't work, so the little guy came out via c-section! I had a birth plan ready and everything too weeks ahead of time, and it ended up being useless lol.

  2. My first baby was Frank Breech as well. We went to the Civic to have the baby turned. No luck. It was too painful me. She never did turn and i ended up having a c-section with her. Whatever happens it will all turn out. Good Luck.

  3. Prenatal yoga has some great posed to turn that baby upside down. I just delivered my first child on March 29th (although he wasn't due till the 2nd of June) and when he would jam his head under my ribs I would get down and do a few poses and he would flip right over. He came out at 3.10 lbs and 18inches so I was at lucky that he was 9 weeks early as it made the delivery easy! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy.

  4. Don't freak out too much about the size. They aren't always to accurate. I was told that my daughter was too small for my stage in pregnancy at 38wks. When she was born at 41wks she was 9.4lbs. And I was worried she wasn't thriving! Yeah right too small!!

  5. Repeat after me: Ultrasound is often wrong. Now repeat it every time you think about giving birth to a big baby.

I have no personal experience with it, but apparently spinningbabies is a good resource for turning a breech baby.

    Good luck!

    P.S. Ultrasound is often wrong.

  6. WOAH! 10 pounds. OUCH!!!

My last ultrasound said my son was going to be over 8 lbs. He was 6 lbs 10 ozs. So, yes, the ultrasound can be incorrect sometimes but most often it isn't.

I hope that everything works out and your boy gets turned around. I heard that a c-section takes a few weeks to heal and it can be a painful recovery. Not to scare you or anything.

  7. Always rememebr that an ultrasound is just an estimate of measurement. We had heard many different sizes throughout the pregnancy, but we ended up with a perfect 6lb 15oz little girl. So don't assume that you will be having a huge baby just yet!
I hope your abby turmns for you and you aheva wonderful delivery experience. Try to take it all in as it really is a miracle (although you may not feel that way during it all LOL!)

  9. During my pregnancy, nobody talked to me about the size of my baby. 2 weeks before, I was at my doctor's office and an intern was checking me that day.I asked her if she was able to determine the size of the baby by palping my belly. She answered that she was not an expert, but she could try. She did and told me that I will have a average size baby:6-7 pounds...I gave birth at 40 weeks and 2 days(I took some castor oil) and at 2h40 pm Elliott was finally out after 12 hours of labour including 3 hours of pushing. His weight was 10 pounds...10 pounds and 22 1/2 inches long...Big baby. I won't say how they got him out of there because I don't want to scare anybody...:0)
So Josie, don't be too scared, everything will go well. Good luck!

  10. I was told at my last ultrasound that I'd probably be giving birth to a 8.5 pound girl or bigger. I thought I'd die! I mean, not literally, but wow, seriously? 8.5 pounds? She was born at 7lb 9oz via cesarean because though I have wide hips, I apparently have a small opening and her head just wouldn't fit through my bones. So she was a nice small little girl after all but even then, it was a c-section for me. And honestly, it never bothered me throughout my pregnancy that a c-section was a possibility (because who knows what will happen). When it happened I didn't care that I wouldn't have a vaginal birth. I just wanted to see my baby! I didn't have a birth plan, either. I didn't go to prenatal classes, nothing. And I don't think anything would have gone any better had I had either experiences (birth plan and prenatal classes). Last comment: I went for a few weeks calling myself mommy to my daughter for myself, to identify myself as a mother TO myself in order to understand and have it sink in that yes, I'm a mommy to this wonderful little alien, I mean, girl. CRAZY! I'm still in awe. I tell her every night that I'm happy that I'm her mommy. I'll probably have to stop that before she gets a big head (she's 19 months old right now). :)

  11. I was told @ the ultrasounds for both my girls that they would be 11 lbs+ if carried to term... They were 8lbs 1oz & the other 8lbs 11oz & I carried them both to 39 weeks... Both delivered via c-section b/c my pelvis is titled too much - NOT b/c of their size; it's all about the positioning. I was told sometimes the ultrasound weight estimates can be off b/c of the amt of fluid... Best of luck to you w/ delivery! :) It's the greatest adventure you will every have!

  14. Ouch, I hope you stretch well ;p I was always told that it was the father's mother who determined birth weight. Me and my sister were both almost 9 lbs and all my own babies were under 7 lbs (biggest being 6.5). Good luck on the breech though!

  15. Well Josie...I had 5 babies...my eldest is 23, my youngest 13...bottom line, you will get through it all fine and when you hold that bundle of joy anything and everything you have gone through in the last nine months will appear before you in this incredible miracle of life. Savour the moments, realize that every preganancy is different and yup there may be some pain, a little discomfort, a big baby or not...but the moment you hold that bundle it will all disappear. I wish you,John and baby all the best! You are blessed!

  17. Both my boys were in transverse position so I had to pick a date for a c-section. And, the best part was that I don't even know what or how a contraction feels like, I never had them. They stayed in that position during the whole time of the pregnancy. The ob/gyn said, after performing the c-section for my second son, that the reason why they were in transverse position was because my uterus was heartsharped. They lodged themselves in the comfy round cavity of my heartshaped uterus.

    Good luck!

  18. At 33 weeks my ultrasound technician said that my 'little' guy weighed about 6 1/2 lbs. I was a little nervous so at 38 weeks I asked my midwife if she was going to send me for another ultrasound; she said that her hands were a better tool of measurement than an U/S and that they were often incorrect. She told me not to worry, especially because I was so small throughout my pregnancy (most people thought I was 6 months along when I was almost full term). When I was in labour I asked, once again, how big they thought he was going to be and they estimated 8lbs at that point; I had decided to go without drugs and laboured in the tub (which, by the way, is AMAZING!!!!) and when it was time to deliver Keagan (naturally, no epidural) he ended up being 10lbs2oz. I also SWORE up and down that he was going to come early--by at least two or three weeks--and he came at 39w5d. The good news is, a 10lb baby CAN be delivered naturally with no ill effects afterwards (I did not require any stitches/little to no damage). I actually preferred the natural labour because I felt like I was in control of the whole experience!! Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and labour!! :)
