Is My Baby Moving Enough?

March 15th, 2010

I’ve read lately that at 29 weeks you should be able to feel your baby kick or move 10 times in an hour. I must admit it’s hard to find an uninterrupted hour in the day to keep track of the movement, but overall I feel like he doesn’t move that much and it has me a little concerned. Obviously it’s something I’ll be talking to my doctor about, but in the meantime I’m curious to know what other mom’s (who are at the same stage as me) are feeling. Some days he moves a ton, but I feel like most days my little guy is pretty chill. Or maybe I’m just having a hard time differentiated between kicks and movement. Movements are more subtle than kicks so maybe if I really concentrate I’ll feel more. I hate that I’m even worrying about this… Everything is okay, right?

  1. Everything is ok. I'm sure of it.
There are probably lots of times when you don't even know he's moving and he is. You're a busy girl!
Clemmie used to be quite still during the day and I would notice her moving much more in the evening when I was able to lie down and relax.
I do remember trying to count her movements...impossible!
Some babies are much lazier than others in the womb. He could also be big compared to the size of you and not have as much room in there to sprawl out.
Talk to your doctor, but don't worry. Every baby and mom is different.

  3. I think EVERY mom-to-be has the same concerns at some point! Don't worry - if you feel the baby moving at least a few times a day, everything will be fine! Like Blackbird said, he's probably moving and you don't even notice! I noticed the movement of my babies much more during the night too. Discuss it with the doc for sure, but it doesn't sound like there's any cause for concern. Take care!

  4. I had the same concerns as you. The baby moves a lot more than we notice. As mentioned above, when you finally sit and relax, that is where you will feel it most. My son is now two but I still remember worrying about the movement.

  5. Josie - You sounded like I did. I was a nervous rec when I was pregnant with my daughter last year. I kinda went overboard and decided to count how many times she moved in a hour and I would mark in on my sheet. The doctor's say that as long as she moves once in hour you are fine. Speaking from experience, my daughter Tayla would move around 10 - 20 times in a hour, I thought that it was great but now it is not soo great as my wonderful daughter has ants in her pants, she moves all the time. She was 8 1/2 months when she was walking. So if your little one is not moving that much, enjoy it and do not worry like I did.........

  6. Josie;

Not un-common to worry about the baby not moving. All mom-to -be are nervous as they read all the books that are available to you plus freinds opinions, and the wonderful information super highway. Speaking from experience with one of each, my daughter was non-stop movements, my son hardly any. The saying boys are lazy, I believe starts right in the womb. I'm sure you and baby are perfectly fine, however your Dr is there for you to bring those concerns up with and then get piece of mind when you go for your check up and hear that little heart beat going nice and strong.

  7. Dearest Josie
What you are experiencing is natural anxiety that all mom's-to-be-share.
My daughter Aeverie barely caused a stir in-utero, my don Ethan Jack never stopped moving. Both are healthy and happy childrent today.
Perhaps a store-bought fetal monitor would relive some anxiety, cause you could hear at all times the heartbeat and know your boy's alright.

  10. Hi Josie,

I'm at 35 weeks with my first baby, and like you had times when I questioned what was going on. I found that while I was up and about on my feet the baby didn't move all that much, but once I sat and relaxed, she moveed all the time. I read somethwere that walking is like rocking your baby to sleep. Also, you are petit and as you get further along, there will be less room to move. I still sometimes feel that there isn't enough movement, but everyone has assured me that they baby is resting for the "Big Day". Good luck, for us the count down is on, it is only a matter of time ...

  11. Josie, you may not realise the baby is moving too. You are still early on. Don't make yourself crazy with trying to count. If the doctor says things are okay, I am sure they are. At the beginning, I remember the movements feeling like little bubbles in my tummy - kinda like hunger pangs. And once you rest at night, you might feel it more. Again, don't worry. Soon enough, the baby will be kicking and moving around so much you wonder why you were so anxious for it!!! I used to lie with my belly in my hubby's back so the baby would kick him in his sleep. (hehe, hey if I cannot sleep - no one will!) Enjoy each stage - cause each is unique and you'll never get the last one back.

  12. Hi Josie
My daughter is now 8 months and throughout my pregnancy I had questions just like you do. I didn't have a blog, so I couldn't get comments like you do. But these websites saved me so much anxiety! They're online communities that become your best friends and who are where you are. Hope it helps you like it helped me.

  13. Hi Josie,
Congrats on your pregnancy. It is the most precious time ever. I just had my first daughter 3 months ago and I have never been happier. I too worried about my little ones movements but like all the other ladies have said 'every baby is different'. Try to have a cold glass of orange juice and I bet your little man will be doing flips in no time. Also not sure if you are aware of this site but I was part of a blog site called 'I am pregnant' that follows along week by week and its just a bunch of pregos that share their questions, comments and complaints about their journies with pregnancy. It was really helpful to hear other women in the same boat as you. Hope this helps. Happy St. Pattys Day

  14. My wife and I had a midnight freak out trip to the hospital at around 30 weeks because she couldn't remember the baby moving at all the whole day and all of a sudden she just was terrified and needed help. The hospital was very good and took her in immediatly and put a monitor on and heard the heartbeat was fine and all that, and then sent her home. The next day the baby partied like a rock star in there :) So maybe she just had a lazy day that day! That was the only hspital trip for the entire prgancy (other than delivery) so i think we did pretty good :) So don't worry, it's normal!

  15. I'm 35 weeks, and have a LAZY baby...but this has been bugging me all pregnancy....My placenta is in the front so apparently it can absorb some of the movement (meaning i feel less)....But I do kick counts each night (6 movements in 2 hours)...to reassure myself!

i find a glass of orange juice or chocolate milk, then lying down after generally helps....or playing lullabies or other music (i put the iphone on my stomach and lie back and wait!)

    (so i'm a bit neurotic ;)

  16. Josie,

People tried to tell me that my daughter was supposed to be moving all the time too, she moved when she wanted. If you are worried play some music on your belly that worked all the time or as others have said have something sweet.

  17. i remember some days, my lil josh would move so much, i would have to sit down, and other days i wouldn't feel him as much, and i would panic, i know the feeling.... or he would be moving, id get Sean to feel and he would stop, and at night when i was laying down, i would feel him move, and watch my stomach move, and other nights it wouldn't, it is scary, but perfectly normal, my sister had her baby b4 me, and she said she never really felt any movement and everything is and was perfectly ok.

  18. Movement is very important... don't take it lightly.... I lost our baby girl at 26 1/2 weeks... never knew why!!! I thought I was being nurotic for calling my OB. I hadn't felt movement for about 24 hours. She advised me to go to Queensway for a non-stress test... a few hours later found out she was no longer alive... so I would say your baby moving around is very important..... This is not meant to scare any pregnant women just a heads up from someone who's been through it..... it's been a rough last few months coping....

  19. Oh my goodness Josie! Everything is FINE. Your a busy woman and probably dont feel his every movement. 20. Josie,

I had the same worries as you, to the point I went to the hospital twice so we could hook the fetal monitor to my belly, just to make sure my daughter was ok. The second time the nurse taught me a trick. Cause they get so huge in such a tight space they tend to not move as much in the thrid trimester. So take a cup of gingerale, well half ginger ale and half ice cubes. Let it get SUPER cold. And then take a few big sips. Once the cold water hits the baby's home, he'll start moving. Trust me :)

  21. Don't worry Josie, when I was pregnant with my daughter, who was my first my mother kept asking me if I could feel the baby move and I was 4 months pregnant and I told her no, I haven't and she was surprised by that. Well, now I'm on my third pregnancy, it was a surprise and when I was at 4 months I could feel like a fluttering. NOW, I swear this kid is going to be a football player LOL! It's moving around but I find when I'm relaxing it decides to move a little more. Don't worry about it, as long as you feel something but I know it took awhile for me to realize that my daughter was actually moving around before I could tell. Take care :o)

  22. I didn't feel my daughter move for about 12 hours, and they did an ultrasound to discover she was just too big!!!!! After a glass of apple juice, then chocolate milk, she started moving again, due to the sugar, and me (mom) just needed a bathroom quick! He is fine, just getting kind of cramped in there! lol
